STUDY AT THE BODELIAN LIBRARY ARCHIVE

Oxford, United Kingdom

22-26 Sep 2025

Monika Mitášová, Zdeňka Nemcová Zedníčková and Jana Bernartová carried out a study trip and stay in the archive of manuscripts and rare prints of the Bodleian Library in Oxford, UK. The subject of the study and the study documentation obtained was the archive of correspondence of Ada Augusta King, Lady Lovelace, especially those parts of the manuscripts where the letter writer dealt with the problems of studying mathematics, geometry and, more generally, science and poetry. The studied letters also contained graphic parts: the search for variant solutions to selected geometric problems, which show Ada's non-trivial spatial imagination and imagery, which later led to her interpretation of the calculating machine designed by Charles Babbage. The solution of the topological problem "7 bridges of the city of Königsberg" was also studied, including the solution algorithm and the problem of Ada's concept of "poetic science", for which, unfortunately, only a fragmentary note has survived. All documented material is and will be the subject of further study and interpretation in the upcoming outputs of the Creative Software/Digital Neural Network Virtual Futurologist A°D°A project, and further in the exhibition and A°D°A publication in 2026.
